In this decade, Manchester United has won the Premier League and League Cup twice, Community Shield 4 times and the Europa League once.

We started the decade not too badly winning the League title twice in 4 seasons and runners up the other 2 times. We qualified for the Champions League final in 2010-11 against all odds. We were beaten by the better team in that final, reaching the final with that team was an achievement itself.

Everything changed for us after 2012-13 season when Sir Alex Ferguson decided to retire after winning the league for a record 20th time. It was to be the last of the league titles we would win in this decade and I would say the last in a long time because since then things have gone from bad to worse for us to the delight of our haters.

The prediction and claims from within the club that we will survive and be able to replicate the success of Sir Alex after he left proved to be false. We have had 5 managers in 6 years including Ryan Giggs’ stint as caretaker manager in 2013-14.

The team has won 4 trophies in 6 years but largely the performances have been inconsistent. There has been no apparent strategy in the managerial appointments and recruitment and retention of players. Nothing is working out and it doesn’t seem like things are going to get better soon.

Personally, I felt David Moyes was a horrible appointment and that set the tone for the post-Sir Alex era. We appointed 2 experienced and proven winners after Moyes but one, Van Gaal was outdated in his methods. He did give us a FA Cup to savour and wins in big matches. Then came Mourinho and I enjoyed his first season at the club, we played well and won the Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League for the first time ever in the club’s history.

With better luck and finishing, we would have done better in the League that season. He followed up a very good first season with our highest placed finish so far in the post Sir Alex era, 2nd. However, strangely I didn’t feel the team progressed from the 1st season. In his 3rd season, he self-destructed and got sacked.

Then came club legend, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who did fantastically well after taking over, winning most of his initial matches over 3 months and got the job permanently. After getting the job permanently, the results dropped and so did the performances going into present day.

I am not only blaming the managers or players for our struggles, the owners, CEO and decision makers should be questioned too. It just seems that at the moment, this group is immune to the poor results because the club keeps making profits off the pitch. Right now, heading into a new era, things don’t look like changing for the better. I just hope in my lifetime, I will be able to see United successful like before.
